Snapdragon 855 promise great news on smartphones 2019
the market has been weak in recent years. The top-of-the-line 2016 smartphones were virtually the hardware enhancements, design adaptations and addition of camera sensors.
That is about to change in 2019. At least according to what Qualcomm showed us at the Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018, which takes place in Hawaii and for which TodoCelular was invited. The new possibilities that the latest cutting-edge platform of the company offers enlivens the launches of the next year.
Next, we’ll showcase the news that awaits us in next year’s major releases, which includes the 5G and a new way to unlock the smartphone.
Qualcomm is not kidding. The Snapdragon 855 promises to be quite powerful. The platform can be up to three times more powerful than the predecessor and about twice as good as the competitor’s. The company did not specify what this competing chipset would be.
Being more specific, we can perform up to 45% better in processing (CPU) and 20% in graphics rendering (GPU) when compared to Snapdragon 845. Regarding energy efficiency, the new platform can offer up to seven times more autonomy to watch videos on YouTube in HDR.
It is good to remember that a chipset is not only made of the processor and the graphics chip, it goes far beyond that. Qualcomm explained that Snapdragon 855 has a new architecture, with improved organization of cores and other components. That’s why, in addition to being more powerful, the platform is also more efficient. This chip is already manufactured with the new process at 7 nm.
Another improvement of this efficiency is that the chip manages to maintain the maximum processing for more time without stress, that is, it can play for a longer period without loss of performance. And without having to rush to the outlet, either.
But performance improvements have been seen year after year since 2016, but this has not translated into new features. And that’s what’s about to change in 2019. Qualcomm also talked about some new features that smartphones can take advantage of.
There are game enhancements with performance optimization and new features in everything from development to more powerful graphics and greater immersion. And it will also be possible to play HDR videos up to 120 fps, as well as mixed reality content with a resolution of 8K in 360 degrees.
The camera also has news. For those who like to capture videos, it will be possible to take advantage of 4K portrait mode. And in real time, there is no kind of image processing at a later time. And also HDR + capture.
Another change is the addition of a dedicated image capture core, which should reduce power consumption by up to four times when recording videos.
And finally, artificial intelligence. The Snapdragon 855 also has a dedicated AI core, and should use machine learning and other more complex functions up to three times the competitor’s performance – possibly the Kirin 980
And the most anticipated feature is the 5G. The Snapdragon 855, apparently, will have two variants, one with a 4G modem and another with a modem that will allow the use of 5G networks, which should be enabled in the United States next year. For us Brazilians, it should take a little longer, maybe in 2020, but probably later.
If you have not yet understood the benefits of 5G, it’s an even faster mobile network that goes beyond that. The big question is the low latency, that is, less delay in communicating the device with the network. It is essential, for example, that you no longer fear when playing a Mobile PUBG.
Have you noticed that sometimes you are shooting at an opponent and suddenly he jumps five feet to the right and is unloading the bullets on your character? This is latency, a delay in communication between your device and the server. This is just an example, but we find it quite enlightening.
Finally, the next generation of mobile connectivity is one of the flagship cars of the event in Hawaii, with US carriers demonstrating the possibilities of 5G. And some manufacturers took the time to showcase their solutions. Motorola took the Moto Z3 with the special Snap, and Samsung also has a mysterious prototype that connects to the faster and lower latency network – but from that moment on we could not get much closer.
Qualcomm also introduced a new 3D ultrasonic fingerprint reader on the screen. It is not a component of Snapdragon 855, but a separate sensor. And it is different from the one used by companies that already offer smartphones with digital unlock on the screen, precisely by the type of reading.
Vivo, OPPO, OnePlus, Xiaomi and Huawei use an optical reading. The Qualcomm sensor is ultrasonic and in three dimensions, and promises to read your digital correctly, even if your finger is dirty or wet. Because it will read your finger pattern and evaluate the depth of these marks.
